The excitement was palpable at ABE South Africa’s third Professional Development Institute (PDI) event on 14th September 2024, where educators were taken on a journey into the world of real-life biotechnology applications. Teachers keen to deepen their involvement in the ABE program received an introduction to ABE’s goals and an in-depth look at Chapter 2. The highlight? A Crime Scene Investigation featuring a “dog drool” mystery! Educators used gel electrophoresis—just like in a real biotech lab—to solve the case, giving them hands-on insight into how biotechnology is used in fields like forensic science. We also hosted a LabXchange simulation on restriction digest, preparing them for the next phase: working with plasmids. It was an exhilarating event, and we’re excited to see how these educators will bring their newfound knowledge back to their classrooms!
