First Face-to-Face ABE Türkiye Teacher Meeting Held at METU!

On Sunday, May 12, 2024, the first face-to-face ABE Türkiye Teacher Meeting was held at METU Biological Sciences Department. In addition to ABE teachers, guest teachers, METU students who provided support to the program within the scope of the community service course, and the ABE Türkiye project team attended the meeting.

The Teacher Meeting began with the “Let's Complete Each Other” warm-up activity that showed the meaning of the day. Participating teachers introduced themselves by finding other teachers who carried the sequence that completed the nucleotide sequence they selected from the bag accompanied by music.

After the story and objectives of the ABE Master Teacher Fellowship Program carried out globally were explained in general, the ABE Türkiye Teacher Fellowship Program, which was piloted locally in Türkiye for the first time in the 2023-2024 academic year, and our 6 fellow teachers were introduced: Ms. Meltem Küçükarslan from Keçiören Science and Art Center, Mr. Süleyman Atilla from Merkez Sınav College, Mr. Veysel Özdemir from Altındağ Şehi̇t Serhat Öztürk Middle School, Ms. Nesibe Sevindik Kuyucu from Kayseri Atatürk Middle School, Mr. Müşerref Dalkılıç from Yenimahalle Science and Art Center and Mr. Tunahan Öncel from Antalya Kumluca Havva Sedat Avcıoğlu Science High School.

In addition, there was another special guest, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onur Kenan Ulutaş, who colored to the meeting upon the invitation of our 2024 ambassador teacher Mr. Sercan Çoban, gave up-to-date information about biotechnology and its areas of use.

Later, our 6 master teachers shared the scenario and game designs, measurement and evaluation tools, classroom practices and action research they developed throughout the year within the scope of the fellowship program with the ABE teacher community. After the presentations, Gazi University Gazi Faculty of Education faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nilay Keskin Samancı and METU Computer and Instructional Technologies Education Department faculty member and Center for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Education director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Göknur Kaplan and the participating teachers provided constructive feedback and made significant contributions to the development of the fellows’ projects.
