Ethics and Bioethics Practices Implemented at Merkez Exam College: Collaboration of Our Teachers Süleyman Atilla and Gizem Sarıyıldız with Philosophy Faculty

Our ABE teachers Süleyman Atilla and Gizem Sarıyıldız collaborated with the philosophy teachers of their school and carried out Ethics and Bioethics implementations at Central Sınav College. With these implementations, our ABE teachers reached a total of 164 students from the 9th, 10th and 11th grade levels.

Our ABE teachers together with the guidance of the philosophy teacher at their school conducted a one-hour, theoretical session about ethics with all students from different grade levels. In this online session, the concepts of ethics and morality, basic questions of ethics, foundations of Socratic discussion, universal ethical principles and ethical questions were discussed. Afterwards, a 3-hour ethics and 3-hour bioethics implementation was conducted face-to-face with each of the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade classes. Face-to-face ethics implementation covered the foundations of Socratic discussion, clarification of values, basic concepts, defining the ethical problem, and an introduction to ethical reasoning. Ethical reasoning session was carried out through the wagon dilemma, a dilemma adapted from the novel Les Misérables and other scenarios. In the face-to-face bioethics implementation, universal ethical principles were reminded and bioethical reasoning processes were practiced through different scenarios. The philosophy teachers of the school contributed to the process by participating in the online session and making videos about ethics.

All materials used in the implementations and the videos taken by the teachers in the context of ethics were shared with ABE teachers as an open source.
