ABE TURKIYE BIOETHICS TEACHER TRAINING COMPLETED
The face-to-face ABE Turkiye Bioethics Teacher Training was completed on January 14, 2024 at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Biological Sciences Department İn Ankara. The training started with an ice breaking activity where the teachers defined their own definition of learning, followed by a session on the fundamentals of Socratic Dialogue.
VALUE CLARIFICATION
Before experiencing the ethical reasoning process, we discussed in depth with the teachers on some basic concepts such as values, ethics, morals, dilemmas, and universal ethical principles. Afterwards, the teachers defined the ethical problem in the context of given dilemmas on different sociological issues and experienced ethical decision-making processes by taking into account universal ethical principles.
BIOETHICAL DECISION MAKING
Bioethical discussions were held among the teachers about whether the Ministry of Agriculture should support the production of GMO tomatoes that are resistant to leaf worms.
In the last session of the training, pedagogical evaluations were made based on the roles of the teacher and students in the implementation of the bioethical decision making process. In addition, how teachers could implement ethics and bioethics implementations in their classrooms as well as the difficulties they might encounter together with coping strategies are discussed in depth through examples.
